MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Our manufacturing process involves several steps, whereby much care and attention is given to the production of each tile. The process begins by weighing each of the raw materials used to make the tile in order to obtain the proper mixture.

Next, the powder mixture is put into a high energy mixer and the correct amount of water is added. We then put the newly formed clay through a pug mill extruder in order to take out any air bubbles present in the clay. In our process, the extruder can extract either a sheet of clay that is cut by a tile mold or it can extract a 7 inch diameter mass slug.

The clay mass slug is used by hand forgers to make the mouldings, trims, reliefs and the majority of the tiles. Our hand forgers are responsible for the incredible detail in all hand made pieces. The next step is the drying process. Field tile goes into our vertical dryer for fast drying while the rest of the tile to be hand-painted is slow dried at normal room temperature.

After the tile is dry, we apply a base and then the different imported unleaded glazes either by hand or by a glazing line. These tiles either go straight to the kiln or they go to the hand paint department which will give the pieces the final touch. All our pieces are fired in two types of kilns: a roller hearth or intermittent kiln.

Once the ceramic pieces are cool to the touch, they are sent to the selection department. This department individually inspects each tile to determine its quality. Finally, the tile is packed and sent to the warehouse department.
